“Thirsty” resources

November 17, 2008 · 2 Comments

thirsty-title-webAs promised here are some resources I have found helpful for quenching that thirst for true spiritual satisfaction.  Remember that these are merely tools that can catalyze your relationship with Jesus.  They don’t replace it.  Together they don’t become a “spiritual smoothie” that solves all your problems.  They are merely things that can help.

Books

Eat this Book by Eugene Peterson - helpful for discovering the ancient practice of “lectio divina” which is more about receiving God’s Word than merely reading it for information.

The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg - helpful introduction to Spiritual Disciplines.  Read this if you want a resource that helps you discover how to live out disciplines in a modern context.

The Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster - classic work on Spiritual Disciplines.  Get this if you want to dive deep into the disciplines;

Prayer by Philip Yancey - Yancey is one of my favorite authors.  He always approaches a subject from different and challenging angles.  Read this if you want to be challenged AND helped in regards to prayer.

The Organic God by Margaret Feinberg - A great book to discover or re-discover the kind of relationship God wants with his children.  Read this if you want to be inspired and given an example of what it looks like practically to live your life in relatinship with God.

Web

http://lynnbarbee.wordpress.com - a blog dedicated to prayer and praying

www.biblegateway.com - search multiple translations of Scripture

www.crosswalk.com - bible study tools and commentaries

www.youversion.com - an interactive online Bible tool that allows you network with others

What about you?  Are there resources you have found helpful?

Sunday Night Reflections

November 16, 2008 · 1 Comment

Hey everyone.  Thought we had a great Sunday.  Here’s some thoughts:

  • It was great to have Bobby Jackson leading us in worship.  I think switching things up like that where Bobby leads at East while Kevin leads at West is a great reminder that we are ONE Church in two locations.  We’ll be doing the same thing with the teaching in January where I’ll be preaching at West in while Greg is at East.
  • The whole team (Dave, Tim, Jason, Sheila and Bobby) did a fabulous job.  I especially like “All Because of Jesus.”  I’ve been waiting for us to do that one.  I love that song;
  • Kevin was leading over at West Campus.  I haven’t heard yet how it went but I’m sure they had a great worship experience.  Sorry West Campus, you can’t have him.  He’s all ours;
  • I really have to give some props to Lonnie (on sound), Tonia (on Media Shout), Sheila and Randy (worship coordinator) for making setup and tear down go seamless;
  • Greg’s message was a good cap on the Thirsty series.  I loved it because it wasn’t standard fare on Bible reading.  God has indeed intended His Word to be so much more.  I think the message “TXT” was a great primer on receiving God’s Word.  I was even talking to someone at lunch about how thorough Greg is.  His analytical mind really explores a topic;
  • The Jesus Juice video was a riot.  I heard some great feedback on it.  More than one person in 2nd service told me someone from 1st told them to make sure they got in the theater in time to catch it.  I think it was particularly funny because we knew the faces in the video.  Can someone say “typecast” for the actors?
  • Let me be a little revealing…Ever since we launched I have wondered what attendance would do.  I don’t want to paint the picture that attendance is everything.  It’s not.  But it is a measurement of whether or not we are actually reaching people.  Every week, without fail, I pray that God would bring who He wants to our campus.  And I have been consistently pleased that we have landed at a good solid attendance around 250.  I am thrilled that God has blessed us with a solid attendance to grow from.  I love seeing new faces.  And I love seeing the faces of people who are connecting;
  • I was thrilled to see 3 new teens back again!  I had briefly spoken with these three particular teens but, I had not really connected with them.  No problem, because Chris, our Student Life Direct had!  They have been connecting in SLW for a couple weeks now.  We have around 25 or 30 teens each week in Student Life Worship!  God is doing great things in the Student Ministry;
  • We ran out of newcomer gifts today.  I’m so sorry about that.  If you didn’t get yours, please come back next week and we will have yours waiting!
  • Today, I was thinking about “What’s next” more than ever.  I really believe God has some great things in store for Suncrest-East.  I’ll put some of my thoughts to digital form this week;
  • In the meantime, don’t forget about Pie-appalooza.  Next Sunday from 4-6pm at West Campus.  Hope to see you there!

Sunday night reflections (on Tuesday)

November 11, 2008 · 1 Comment

Wow, I’ve been bad about this.  Better late than never, right?  We have had two awesome weekends since I last reflected.  Here are some thoughts:

  • We are still seeing new faces.  It has not ceased to amaze me that new people are still walking through our doors;
  • Maybe more important than that is that we have people connecting with us.  I see it on Sunday mornings, in groups that have started and in some special events we are hosting;
  • We have an awesome Children’s ministry.  I already know this but it is great to hear this from parents dropping off and picking up their kids;
  • This past weekend’s message may have been one of the most helpful in awhile….to me anyway!  I don’t really know if it helped anyone else, but preparing it was extremely helpful to me.  The Holy Spirit is the most mysterious person of God and yet serves such a central role to our connection with God.

Peace,

doug

Get connected

November 6, 2008 · 1 Comment

It has been so great to see all the new faces at Suncrest-East.  That of course brings the challenge of getting to know one another.  We had 50 brave the cold at our last connection event at County Line Apple Orchard.

We have several more opportunities to connect with Suncrest on the horizon.  Love for anyone trying to figure out what’s next to take opportunities of these.

1st - Community Group sign ups continue this week.  Groups are the absolute best place to connect at Suncrest.  In a group, you can get to know other Suncresters, study Scripture and do life together.  Look for one that will work for you this Sunday.

2nd - A first of it’s kind…Pie-appalooza!  On November 23rd, bring a pie and get to know others.  We are going to have a great time with the pie theme including a pie eating contest.  It will actually take place at Suncrest’s West campus facility (10009 Parrish St., St. John) from 4pm until 7pm.  Make plans now to attend.

3rd - Welcome to Suncrest - This is an informal time to get to know staff, find out more about Suncrest and explore next steps.  The next one will be December 14th at Doug’s house.

You can register for any of these events or find out more by emailing doug.gamble (at) suncrest.org.

Sunday Night Reflections

October 26, 2008 · 1 Comment

Thoughts on today:

  • The band was rockin’ today!  It was a great worship experience at East.  I have to admit, it was pretty awesome to hear Sheila lead “Your Love is Deep.”  She did a fantastic job.
  • It was great to have Greg in person today.  It was a fabulous message with which to kick off the Thirsty series.  It was also a little nice to “show off” what our campus does each week;
  • It’s such an honor to meet guests that God has brought through our doors.  If you are new to Suncrest and reading this, we have prayed so much for God to send you;
  • I’m excited to get most of us connected in groups.  Group sign-us started today and will continue through next week.  We had a very positive response today.  Okay, I’m gonna lay it out there.  I think a healthy place for our campus to be at with groups is 60% in groups.  Yes, i just pulled that percentage out of thin air.  However, to have 60% of attenders in groups would be an awesome place to start;
  • A few of us (around 50) ventured out to the County Line Apple Orchard for our Hotdog roast and hayride…and we got snow on!!  I couldn’t believe it.  It was about 6pm and we had just finished the hayride.  I was looking forward to a delicious hotdog roasted over the open flame and this ominous cloud filled the sky with darknesss.  Before we knew it the wind picked up to about 100 mph (I said about) and then the snow.  It didn’t last long, but it was enough to call it a night.  What a memory maker.  We will not soon forget that event.
